Love is the way
Musician Nick Cave wrote earlier this summer that he wishes he could write political songs, “but I’m just not that kind of songwriter.” And then he adds: “I’m not trying to save the world … I’m trying to save the soul of the world.”
At first read this struck us as, well, a bit arrogant. But then we realized that as massive as this mission is, it’s also extremely actionable, including for creatives: Music, art, language, human connection – these are matters of the soul that each of us can work to grow in our own unique way.
And so we sing, because “Love Is the Way.”

Speaking of the soul matter of love, we were delighted to sing in two wedding ceremonies this summer, for Levi and Reah and Erin and Daniel (photo by The Commoneer):

Other people’s weddings always take us back to our own:

Beginning this September we will be leading a songwriting workshop at the new Rocktown House of Music in Harrisonburg, and we hope you locals can join us! Here’s the workshop description: This course will help you learn the elements of strong songwriting and habits for cultivating them, make your song lyrics pop through poetic techniques, analyze new and familiar songs, and share your own song ideas and drafts with a group for constructive feedback (or choose a non-original song to analyze) – all in a collaborative, supportive, low-pressure atmosphere.
And this month we’ll be back for the third year in a row at the Staunton Public Library for their A Little Lunch Music series. It’s a free show 12-1 on Thursday, August 7, with free pizza for all.
