Light and hope
Nights have been slowly but surely outweighing the daylight, and the darkest time of year is almost upon us. There is beauty in nighttime; it’s the nightmares of the day that are only too real: wars and their wake of devastation, insidious tentacles of greed and bigotry, discord and separation twining through the humanity in and around us.
Even when we feel like cursing the encroaching shadows, when we long for “truth and grace” and don’t know what to do, we point our feet in the direction of hope by singing a carol, helping at the local food pantry, inviting neighbors for dinner, taking civil action for peace, lighting a candle. In the words of our song Invocation (Spotify, YouTube):
I’ve got no place to go today
Nothing to buy, no need to say
A prayer or anything else –
Light a candle
A highlight of this season for us is hearing people’s heartfelt responses to our Christmas song Solemn Stillness, Weary Streets. You can listen to the original song on Spotify or YouTube, and watch several creative interpretations of the hymn version here.
We wish you light and hope this holiday season.
