Clymer
& Kurtz
Contemporary folk – Shenandoah Valley, VA
A duo whose music feels close and intimate, yet vast and expansive — gently powerful vocals, inventive guitar, rich harmonies, and songwriting that traces the jagged edges of daily life.
About the Duo
Clymer & Kurtz is a contemporary folk singer-songwriter duo from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia — an “exquisite,” “subtle,” “always imaginative,” and “soul filling” pair who have been partners in life and music for more than two decades.
Maria Clymer (vocals, guitar, piano, light percussion) and Christopher Kurtz (vocals, guitar) seamlessly blend intense and gentle melodies textured with harmonies, agile and inventive guitar playing, and sometimes piano or percussion, crafting music that is at once simple and rich, emotive and unique.
Over the Rhine described their 2023 EP What If You Knew, “It’s all so lovely with a quietness that makes it feel like a surprise when eyes suddenly fill with tears. Beautiful.”
Maria has worked as a bilingual home/school liaison, adult English instructor, and church music director, and sings with the women’s vocal ensemble Shekinah. Christopher has taught middle school English and worked as a radio journalist, university marketing writer, and director of development for a college-access nonprofit.
Their combined music experiences include community choirs, a jazz ensemble, rock and Americana bands, and piano and guitar accompaniment and teaching. They perform as a duo and are available for house concerts, festivals, community events, private parties, and more.

What People Are Saying
A duo whose music somehow feels close and intimate, yet vast and expansive … A sound I think is best described as ‘gently powerful.’
Their songwriting is often subtle and always imaginative…. The lyrics they invent are never trite. They compactly tell meaningful ideas, poetry that makes its point with a few apt words. That’s good songwriting.
It’s all so lovely with a quietness that makes it feel like a surprise when eyes suddenly fill with tears. Beautiful.
Their singing, their songwriting abilities, their instrumental talents, and their arranging skills – they are the total package.
My ears and heart were exquisitely drawn in. I widened my eyes as Christopher took his tasteful guitar picking into the sizzle zone! The vocal quality and so-sweet harmonies were over the top, too…. Their new songs are full of emotion, striving, values and the ups and downs of relationships. Piano, guitar and vocals all support the energy and direction of each song’s lyrics.
Attractive textures … effortless and comfortable…. Christopher flavors his guitar solos with licks that evoke Mark Knopfler and Doc Watson. Maria’s singing ranges from gentle to intense….
